“The only Zen you find on the tops of mountains is the Zen you bring there.” — Robert M. Pirsig

Evan had always wanted to climb a famous mountain.
People said the view was life-changing.
So one summer,
he set out on the journey.
But the path was steep,
the air grew thinner,
and doubts filled his mind.
“Why am I doing this?” he muttered.
Halfway up, he met an elderly woman descending the mountain.
She smiled warmly.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?”
Evan frowned.
“I haven’t seen anything beautiful yet. It’s just exhausting.”
The woman chuckled.
“Oh, the mountain hasn’t changed.
Maybe you’re carrying too much.”
Evan realized his backpack was indeed heavy—
filled with tools he didn’t need,
extra clothes,
and things he brought “just in case.”
He removed half of them and continued.
Suddenly, the climb felt different—
lighter,
clearer,
almost enjoyable.
When he reached the peak,
the view was breathtaking.
He stood in silence,
realizing the mountain had not changed at all.
What changed was him—
his burdens,
his mindset,
his willingness to let go.
The woman was right:
Beauty wasn’t waiting at the peak.
He carried it within him.
Summary: “The world doesn't change—our inner landscape does.”
